When connecting using any of the aforementioned methods, you have the option to choose between an Automatic IP address (DHCP) or a Manual IP address (Static/Fixed).
Automatic (DHCP) is useful in situations where guest users may come and go. It is also simpler to set up, as most machines are set up to operate on DHCP by default.
Manual (Static/Fixed) is useful when the operator wants to limit usage of the console to a select number of machines. It is also useful when user wish to connect the console to a
larger managed network. This requires a fundamental working knowledge of Internet Protocol (IP) and can be tricky for inexperienced users to set up.
Before getting started, ensure your console firmware and EDIT software are both running the same version. In this demonstration, we will be using Firmware Version 4.02 and
EDIT Version 4 for X32/M32 consoles. Both firmware and EDIT software can be downloaded from any of the applicable product pages in the X32/M32 family.
We will be using a Midas M32R for this demonstration. In this first example, we navigate to the SETUP menu and open the NETWORK tab to view the network settings of the console.
You can see we have DHCP enabled. In this mode, the console obtains an IP address automatically from a DHCP server on the IP network. You are not allowed to change any options in DHCP mode.
In our next example, we disable DHCP and are now allowed to manually assign a static/fixed IP address for the console. We will use this IP address and subnet mask
for the purposes of this demonstration. NOTE: the GATEWAY is not a required field, but in some instances it can help to know the gateway address in order to establish secure
connections and avoid IP conflicts. The gateway address is the fixed IP address of the router/switch that is used to transmit communication between the console and computer.
If a router/switch is not used in your setup, leave this field completely blank (all zeroes).
Next we will navigate to the Ethernet/Wireless settings of our computer. We will use Windows 10 operating system for this first demonstration, however previous versions of Windows are nearly identical.
In your Windows search bar, type 'CHANGE ETHERNET SETTINGS' and hit ENTER. In the ETHERNET menu, click on 'CHANGE ADAPTER OPTIONS' under 'RELATED SETTINGS'.
Right click on your active Ethernet or Wireless adapter and select 'PROPERTIES'. NOTE: you may have several Ethernet or Wireless adapters on your machine. The inactive adapters will usually be denoted
with a red X. Also make note of the file path at the top of the window for future reference; CONTROL PANEL>ALL CONTROL PANEL ITEMS>NETWORK CONNECTIONS. We will use the
ETHERNET adapter for the duration of this demonstration. The same exact method applies for the WIRELESS adapter.
In the 'PROPERTIES' menu, double click 'INTERNET PROTOCOL VERSION 4'.
Select one of the two options here in the IPv4 Properties window. The first option is 'AUTOMATIC/DHCP', and the second option is 'MANUAL/STATIC/FIXED'.
If automatic is selected, the computer will obtain an IP address from the DHCP server on the IP network. If manual is selected, enter your address, subnet, and gateway accordingly and press OK.

If using a THUNDERBOLT dongle to connect over ethernet, choose that option in place of the ETHERNET option. For the duration of this demonstration, we
will continue to use the ETHERNET adapter. Using the drop down menu on the right, we can select AUTOMATIC or MANUALLY. We will select MANUALLY and
choose an IP address and subnet mask that suits our needs. Notice that we change the last digit of our IP address to a 2 so that the Mac IP address does not conflict with our Windows IP address.
Click APPLY in the lower right hand corner to save your changes.
This concludes the setup for Macintosh based operating systems. You may now launch X32/M32 EDIT from your computer and establish a connection from the SETUP menu.
